How do we “read” the skies, the land, and the waters— and how do we learn from those “texts” in order to make decisions that positively affect ourselves and our communities?

Geo-literacy Education in Micronesia (GEM)

Geo-literacy Education in Micronesia (GEM) is an Advancing Informal STEM Learning project funded by the National Science Foundation that is working to demonstrate the potential for effective intergenerational, informal learning and development of geo-literacy through an Informal STEM Learning Team (ISLeT) in Pacific island communities.

GEM started in 2016 and has since brought together 30 ISLeTs across the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (including the states of Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap), and Palau. Every product and event co-created by our ISLeTs is meant to help both the creators and audience use the “texts” of our lands, waters, and skies to make better decisions for ourselves, our communities, and our futures.
